Zeni no Sensou, War of Original and Remake Version – Main Character

The latest japanese dorama I watched is Zeni no Sensou (銭の戦争/War of Money). It was 11 episodes dorama which aired winter 2015 (January to March). This dorama has quite extravagant cast such as SMAP’s Kusanagi Tsuyoshi, ex-AKB48 Oshima Yuko, beautiful rookie actress Kimura Fumino, and many others veteran actors/actresses. The average viewing rate was not less than 13%, which consider very good nowadays. The main reason I watched this drama real time every week is of course because Kusanagi Tsuyoshi as the lead role. But, I also have another reason, this drama actually a remake! The remake of Manwha and Korean drama titled JJeonui Jeonjaeng (쩐의 전쟁/War of Money)! Yup, if you familiar with Japanese drama then you will notice that Japanese drama rarely remake Korean drama. Korean drama more often remake Japanese one. Hmm, okay, I used to love watching Korean drama. But, since Tsuyopon will play it in the Japanese version, then I’ll give it a chance. I had watched Korean version of “War of Money” before watch the Japanese version in order to get familiar with the character and story line.

The main story of both drama is the same. The focus of the story is about the lead role Geum Na Ra (Korean ver) or Shiraishi Tomio (Japanese ver) is working as an elite stockbroker. He also has beautiful and rich fiance Aoike Kozue/Lee Cha Yeon. One day, his father kills himself, leaving behind large debts. Tomio/Na Ra is liable for his father’s debts. He pays what he can with his savings account, but it is not enough. Tomio/Na Ra loses everything. His job, finance and savings. He then becomes homeless and decides to work as a moneylender. When working as moneylender he meets his former teacher’s daughter Konno Mio/Seo Joo Hee and develop feeling towards her.

The base story between Japanese and Korean drama is the same. But, as expected there are a lot of improvisation and Japanese taste decorated Zeni no Sensou that make it a brand new drama.

Main Character

The main character for Korean version is Geum Na Ra played by Park Shin Yang. Na Ra is a smart, ambitious, serious, and family oriented man. When he works as moneylender he always has win win solutions to solve problems, he knows how to deal with various people and circumstances. He decides to not live like his father who died penniless because of debt and seriously pursue that goal until the end of the story. Na Ra is family oriented man, he cried when his parent die, he always concern to his younger sister. What I like about Na Ra is his unique character, although he has big money problem he always looks so loose, relax, and sometimes funny. Park Shin Yang was really brilliant acted Na Ra. The gap between loose and tense were really wonderful.

Shiraishi Tomio played by Kusanagi Tsuyoshi (my favorite Japanese idol lol) is quite different character compared to Na Ra. Yup, he is smart, ambitious, but not family man, a little bit selfish, super serious, and sometimes creepy, and cynical, in short he is a complete jerk! In Zeni no Sensou, Shiraishi is portrayed as a genius guy especially when it’s about number. He could memories sequences of numbers in one shot. That’s why he doesn’t really has hard time to open up someone’s safe (spoiler alert lol), while Na Ra has to write down every possibility combination number.

Unlike Na Ra, Shiraishi is not a family man. He doesn’t really pay attention to his family, not because he doesn’t love them but he is too busy with his own life. He doesn’t shed a tears when he stand by his father’s dead body, while in Korean version Na Ra emotionally express his feeling.
